Students were challenged intellectually and creatively through the different competition elements. They learned that if they can do better, strive harder, accomplish more, then they should. Our mentor brought real-world considerations regarding how to build and plan our teams' city--Millennia. Several students who barely speak in class became quite outgoing and were able to express their opinions well. We approach teaching here at New Vision School with a multi-sensory approach. FCC reinforces that belief, allowing kids to "experience" their learning. The teams melded together well. They worked to problem solve rather than need the teacher at every minute. [Students] had fun and fights, and built a lot of respect for each other. I can hardly wait until next year. The personal relationship that developed between the FCC students and the mentor was a greater learning experience than the FCC competition itself. They learned and want to share their learning with others. What more could I ask for as a teacher? Many of the students were our "at risk"
kids. It has done great things for their self-esteem. |
