Join the Engineering Team of the Future!
Participate in the National Engineers Week
Future City Competition!

You are invited to participate in the National Engineers Week Future City Competition (FCC) by mentoring a team of 7th or 8th grade students.

Mentors help students and educators better understand the practical applications of math and science as they work with students in the design of a future city.

5.0 PDHs of community service are awarded to all mentors whose teams complete the competition and are printed on the mentor's certificate of appreciation.

Engineers in all fields are welcome. Just as cities need all types of engineers, so do our students.

FCC consists of four parts:

  • Computer design & layout using SimCity 4 Deluxe software
  • Building a table top scale model of a section of the city
  • Writing a 500-700 word essay on an assigned engineering-related topic
  • Oral presentation of their team's city and model

Mentors meet with their FCC team(s) at the team's school for an hour each week from September through the end of January. Exact times will be arranged with the with team's teacher.

Mentor resources are contained within a practical FCC Mentor Handbook which includes tips for mentoring and team organization, rules of the contest, online resources for essay research, score sheets, and much more. This handbook will be received at orientation.

If you are interested in being a mentor for FCC, send contact information (name, company, mailing address, office phone and email) to: Colleen Feller, 612/638-1511 or colleen.feller@metroecsu.org.

The top Minnesota team (with teacher and mentor) will compete in Washington, D.C. during National Engineers Week. (February 14-19, 2009)
Airfare and hotel costs are paid by FCC.
In 2006, our Minnesota FCC team won first place at the National Competition!
