Banner:  Engineering the Future

Sponsored by Engineers Week and coordinated by Success Beyond the Classroom, this national program introduces students in grades 7 and 8 to engineering with the popular SimCity software (provided to registered schools).

Cook County Middle School (Grand Marais) will represent Minnesota at the National Future City Competition during the week of February 16, 2009 in Washington DC.

2009-2010 Essay Topic

Students will research and write an essay in 700-1,000 words on:


"Providing an affordable living space for people who have lost their home due to a disaster or financial emergency."

By participating in the Future City Competition:

  • Students design a city of the future with simulation software, build a tabletop scale model, research and write an essay and city abstract, and give an oral presentation to a panel of engineers;

  • Students gain an understanding of the practical applications of math, science, technology and engineering; and

  • Students work with engineer mentors to support their learning.
